South East United Ladies continued their solid start to the 2019 Women's Championship 1 season with a battling display at highly-fancied Metro on Sunday.
With both sides looking to back up from solid first round efforts, it was the home side who got off to the perfect start, opening the scoring inside of five minutes.
However, despite the hosts having the better of the opening exchanges, our backline of Kelly, Jane, Lana, Jade and Abbie all stood up superbly to keep them at bay and, by half time, we had started to come back into the game strongly ourselves.
After the break, we were dealt another early blow, when an attempted clearance ricocheted back into the goal off a Metro striker to double the advantage.
But, far from throwing in the towel, South East roared back into the game, dominating the next half hour, with Kelly, Flick and Danielle enjoying particular success down the right channel. Finally, the courageous Ashlee - who had strained both quads early on - dug deep to race clear and finish superbly to halve the deficit.
We continued to pour forward but, for all our domination, we could not force the equaliser, while Metro astutely reorganised to bolster their backline.
The hosts had continued to look dangerous on the break and their speedy striker broke away to settle the contest with a well-taken third, before a speculative long-range effort put some uneven gloss on the scoreboard.
Our team will probably play a lot worse than this and still win games this season, whilst the Easter break comes at a good time for Ash to get some much needed rest. With Ellie and Lou yet to come into the reckoning, this is shaping up to be a very exciting season for Bart Taylor's team.
South East ladies are in action next at Glenorchy Knights on 28-April.
